I had never really paused to understand the difference between hearing and listening, till it happened to me.
Hearing:
I said: ...I am not "married" to the green card process. However, I am considering a career move. I am speculating about it now
S(h)e said: Immigration in the USA is glorified slavery. I know of many people who have stayed back in the USA because of the stupid green card and the equally stupid process.
I said: Yup, I get that and that is why my career move is not limited by process like the green card process. I am really figuring out what I want to do next.
S(h)e said: I know! Immigration f*cking a****les!!
I said: Hmmm...
Listening:
I said: ...I am not "married" to the green card process. However, I am considering a career move. I am speculating about it now
S(h)e said: Excellent! What are your plans? What are you thinking about?
I said: You know I am starting to jot down my strengths and find out my next big passion. That is what I will focus on.
S(h)e said: Hmm.. How can I be of assistance?
I said: No, I got it! I have a life coach with whom I am working out these details. It helps to have an objective look at this. But thank you for being such a wonderful listener. I appreciate that!
Can you see how this has lent itself to an effortless conversation, without pre-conceived notions or assumptions about what the other person is thinking or what ever is reactivating us? Try this on and you will realize that it actually takes practice to be that kind of a listener. My personal opinion is that listening is such a romantic trait! So, am I listening or hearing? :-) What about you?

Very apt portrayal of how most people who claim to be good listeners only hear.
if i say enaku intha post puriala..wud be a bad reader or a bad understander??? :D :D :D
As I have recently married a Mexican, who will ultimately get a green card, your line of not being "married" to the green card process just made me laugh. ^_^
That said, you'd be surprised how many people lose the trait of listening, even if they've once had the habit. I wonder if our society, with the immediacy of communal talk via twitter or fb, will make us all worse listeners in the long run.
Hey Vidya!
Not sure how I stumbled on your blog, but I realized Ive met you! We met at Michelles place for a potluck few months back. I heard you moved out of Dallas?!?! How are things w you? Great to know you are in the Healthcare industry as well. I am with the Healthcare practice at HP. I smile when I see this line- the immigration process is glorified slavery! I faintly recall you talking about it when we met. I am struggling with some similar question too these days. Write soon, would love to hear back from you.
Cheers
Abhinav
